Hey everyone i was wondering wat different methods you all use to sterilize wood that u collect outside the pet store. Please respond with the steps that you take.

i have heard of sterilizing sticks by baking them around 200 degrees in the over for a period of time (be careful!). i usually pick some sticks, set them aside, dry them, and then give them several coats of mite spray before adding them to the enclosure. something i just thought of would by to douse them with rubbing alcohol. however, i cannot necessarily recommend this because there could be downsides to doing this, although i imagine the alcohol would easily dry off given enough time.

i've always bleached everything i've used. been doing it for 3-4 years with no problems. i dump a gallon of bleach into a half full-full bathtub and let it set for awhile. then i stand everything up in the bath tub and blow a fan on it over night. ready to go in the morning. i'm sure people will tell you there's harmful side effects but i've never had any problems with it.

I usually give them a good scrubbing with soap and hot water, then a mild scrubbing with soap and bleach water followed by a few flushes with boiling water. When I worked at a lab I used to Autoclave them in a walk in autoclave but that was 4 years ago. I don't have that kind of tool anymore.
