Wild Snappers in Nebraska???

El__Quijote Jun 30, 2003 02:57 PM

A friend of mine told me that he saw a sapper about 3 weeks ago... He mentioned that is was GIGANTIC, over 12 inches, and it was roaming close to a road near a pond in Omaha, Nebraska...
My question is, should I believe him??? Could a snapping turtle really live in the wild in Omaha, considering how harsh the winters are around here???
If so, I would be really interested in knowing how they could survive...
Any thoughts???
Thanks,

~ El__Quijote

yes, snappers live in extremely long winter ranges quite well

I know that common snappers are found in Minnesota. The link below is an article of such. Also has a photo of a bicephalous common snapper.
