Horned Puff Adder Drinking

phobos Nov 11, 2004 08:38 PM

Just wanted to share a series of pictures I took of my Horned Puff Adder drinking, not from a water dish, that would be too easy. She likes to drink misted water off her skin.

Picture 1: She is hanging out at the water dish which seems to be the signal she wants a drink. If I mist her anywhere else in the cage she does not drink but tries to flee. She is in the process of "Training" me so I respond by misting her.

Here she is drinking (slurping) water off her skin. Notice how she flattens herself out to catch the "Rain"

In picture 3 she is all finished drinking and moves back into her resting position. Note: I have never been able to get her to drink from the water bowl directly. Besides, she is not all that dangerous and it's fun to have at least one snakes in my collection that I can interact with and not trying to kill me..

Cheers!

Al

Sweet pics man and congrats on working with a very rare and awesome sp! Im envious! How have your experinces been with her so far? Any difficulty getting it on rodents?

I feel ya on enjoying the more placid of our venomous keeps. Though the crazy, border line sadistic antics of our beloved Naja (or other large elapids) give me enjoyment beyond words, its nice to have atleast a few cages which dont present a potential life and death situation everytime to top is lifted (or slid). I belive my female Atheris squamigera fits this nitch nicely. She is wonderfull on a hook and very calm and collected while roosting in her cage. The only time she is trigger happy is when the lights go out

Also, my Aspidelaps, especialy my very large female lubricus seem oblivious to the fact that I could possibly pose any sort of danger to them. All of my adults simply get fasinated with any movment around them and come out to inspect in a very casual mannor. If I were alittle lower in the common sense department(can I get any lower??) I would say they could be free handled 95 percent of the time with zero reaction of any sort. The posiblity of a potential untreatable bite usualy sway me away from the before mentioned idea though.

Anyway, back to the main topic at hand. I have seen the same drinking regimin in my Trimersurus, Cryptelytrops(formaly Trimeresurus)and Atheris. All never ever drink from their bowls and pearch right next to them when it appears they want a drink. My female T.borneensis spends 80 percent of her life underneath her hide and only comes out when she needs a mist or a feed. Even after saying all of that I still cant recall a single time when any have even drank water from their bodies in front of me! They all shed great and get plenty of humidity so they must be taking it in when I leave the room.

Well man, sorry you had to get such a eyefull. Im bored as hell and felt like shooting the breeze.

Good meeting ya at SC, even if it were only breifly.

Later man,
Jeremy G

P.S There should be a pick of my adult C.purp attached.

Hi Jeremy:

Nice to meet you at the SC Show too. No problem shooting the breeze with me. Isn't that why the forums are here beside to argue over stupid stuff....LOL

She was not to difficult to get her feeding on pinkys but I had to get some that were just born so they were small enough. I had to really pester her till she was really pissed, then she would strike and let go. I had to turn off the lights and cover the from of the cage to get her to eat. After a few minutes she would track it down and eat. Then there was a stage where I had to tease her but she did not care about the lights at all. Now she is flying out of the substrate, striking and holding on. I can even get her to chase it down now and grab it. She ate two pinkies on Sunday the second just taking it from the forcept and the first with an explosive strike. I am really please a with her progress and relieved, she was not cheap. My Squam is not so docile, so I giver her a good margin of space. Strangely my Sawscales are fairly quiet and non agressive, almost shy. They are very inquisitive and always peek out to see what I'm doing. Check out my photo gallery on this site. There is one of the two them with their heads right on my camera lens and my fingers closer than I liked for them to be. No sudden moves please!!

Wow...another Genus name change!! I can hardly keep up with them... Looks like a cool snake, nice & healthy with a awesome pattern.

Cheers!

Incredible snake...

I watched a documentry about them the other day and fall in love with them.

As a venomoid keeper (please don't attack I am asking for help), I am planning to switch to hots (never to hot elapids though they are too fast for me ) What do you thing? Can this species be a good starter?

Let me know
Thanks
Yasin
