Haitian boa info needed...

Candoia Nov 11, 2004 10:11 PM

Hey guys, I work in a pet shop and got a fax recently from a reptile distributor. They claim to have CB baby Haitian boas for $10 each. I am assuming they were from gravid wild-caught females that gave birth after being caught, because for only about twenty more dollars you could get larger Haitians. Do any of you have experience with these boas? I'm asking in this forum because they are part of the rainbow boa genus. i wasn't exactly interested in purchasing one, i was just curious as to why they'd be so cheap otherwise (I never hear about Haitian boas). Thanks.

Joe

My experience with CB animals from the importers are the way you thought. Distributors usually List CBB for Captive breed and born animals. and only CB as Captive born.

Joe,
....Haitian Boas are Epicrates striatus striatus. Other subspecies of this species include the Bimini Boa and the Andros Island Boa. Babies of these two subspecies often refuse rodents for their first 6 months to a year. Breeders feed them lizards until they will finally switch. At 10 bucks each they probably are from newly imported WC adults. The fact that they may need lizards for food for awhile would be the only thing that would make me hesitate before buying them. But at that price I would at least get a pair. Imported adult Haitian Boas are known to be a nasty tempered. They can become fine captives, though usually staying a little high strung and they are beautiful snakes.

We had a few in the pet store where I work (LostWorldPetsinc.com) and they would only eat anoles. They spent most of their time in a water dish, and were very slow moving. They weren't nippy but didn't like being handled. They are wicked cute though!
