Mark these just hatched this morning? What little chubbers!! They look great! Seems a little late in the season, but you know in Striped Racerrunners young are born in the fall, in fact in Irvine we used observe the nonates out in late october and even on Thanskgiving week. I susoect the late hatching puts them in a less competetive mode with other reptiles and snakes so they get a better shot. Were these from the same female or different?

Sorry for the confusion. These are the hatchlings from Sept. The pic was from yesterday morning. :

Hey Cable,
How long will it be before you cant tell if they are male or female? Or can you tell right away? When did they hatch?

Ryan-reptilian Nov 12, 2004 10:18 PM

That's just beautiful!!

Hey Cable!

Nice pics of some chunky little guys. Almost two months old now aren't they? They look really good. How many ants are they eating individually right now? I'm glad people finally started posting again--I was beginning to think the keepers had gone into hibernation as well as the pets......hehe.
I'll talk to you soon, buddy

PS: Hey Lester, what are you up to? Haven't heard from you in a while.

Hi Phil,
No, I'm not hibernating yet. I've been out hunting Camponotus sansabaenus ants for my SHL's. It is the one ant so far they have consistently been excited about.

To get these guys I have had to lift a lot of rocks. Man, it's amazing what you find. So far I have seen about 6 scorpions (pictured below), a scorpion looking spider, centipedes, one gecko, termites and a shed snake skin.
I guess it stands to reason that most desert creatures are going to live under ground. But you can walk around for hours this time of year and really not see much in the way of insects. But life a few rocks and there is a whole nother story waiting for you.

Here is a picture of a blueish centipede that I found today. The HL's wouldn't touch it so I'll take that as a sign.

Here is a very small scorpion. He'd easily fit on a dime and not overlap. The first pic is with the MV lamp. The second and third are with a black light. I had heard that you can see them glowing under a black light so I had to try it out. This pic does not do justice. They glow quite a bright fluorescent green.

.

I had two other scorpions that were quite a bit larger so I cut off the stinger and threw them in the THL/SHL tank. The SHL made quick work of the first one. The second died from his injuries before they could get him et.

I later threw the little one in unharmed and the SHL took care of him too.

The Solare hatchlings are eating between 15 and 25 Californicus a day. They just started taking Rugosus yesterday for the first time. They were born between 9/23 and 10/5. So they are roughly two months old.

SDFicklin, I can't really tell for sure yet (mostly due to my failing eyesight) but I believe I have 3 females and one male in the bunch, judging by the bulge. Your little guy/gal is really looking good. Glad to hear she's eating well.

Cheers
