Any ground beef is great. John Richards told me to feed raw cube steak and they love it. Took a bit for them to get used to but now it is no prob. I used to feed chicken livers but they are MUCH to messy. The cloud the water and the cubed beef does not effect the water at all. It did not look good and it also dirties your filter faster.

I tried chop steak last night. Must have been the wrong thing. They didn't eat it and the water is all fouled.

Happens all the time with the chicken I feed. If they don't feel like eating ,the water is all fouled.
I have to go home tonight and clean tanks.

When I feed my snappers, I sit and "hand" feed. I drop each piece in individually, and they don't get more until they eat the first bite. Unless its live food...

And I dont feed ground beef... liver, heart, and kidney-yes...

I'll try some liver or something.
I've been using mostly chicken, then the waters all fouled up.
Tonight I have to go home and clean tanks.

Especially my big guys, they never eat in front of me. I know everyone else says theire big ones eat right away when they drop the food in. Mine never do that.

is this mike with the snapper possibly for sale? if so what happened? i try to feed my snappers live fish as much as possible. of course its easy for me to go out back and catch them. i know most of you don't have that luxury. i just wanted to see what others are feeding their snappers because its getting cold now and the fish aren't biting all the time. thanks to all

The ground beef i "suggested" in the first reply was a typo. I meant to say tenderized beef ie cube steak. This is FANTASTIC for snappes of any age!

Thanks,

I saw on an earlier posting of yours that you are from Maine, so hopefully you can help me out (I am at my parens' house in Vermont). I just found a TINY (~3 inch) black baby turtle tht I think is a snapper (he has webbed feet and a very long tail). Unfortunately I know nothing about turtles, but he is very cold, so I put him inside on some warm peat moss. Now what? I don't know what kind of environment they live in (he was just sitting in the grass on the side lawn), so I'm not really sure what type of habitat to make for him. Any advice would be appreciated!

What do you mean by "chopped steak" i was talking about cube teak because it is tenderized, thusly much more tender. When i feed my little guys, i tong feed them the cube steak and they love it. Some are much more shy than others and wont feed on anything from tongs. If this is the case, you are better off stocking your tank FULL of guppies or any other appropraite size fish. My little guys also LOVE krill. You can get it at most any pet store. These are all great stuff to feed and very cost effective. Liver and kidneys do not offer the nutrients your animals needs.

Mine don't eat till at night.
so whatever I put in,...I put in late at night, just before I shut off the lights.

If they don't eat it, the water is all fouled up in the morning.
Rosies and guppies are too small now for my medium guys, and you're not supposed to feed goldfish.

I wish I had a source for bigger fish.
Sometimes my big guy will eat at night, sometimes its all still there in the morning and I have to change out the water .
Frustrating.

I know most of the guys on the forum with big turtles say they eat right away whenever they feed. Mine never do.

Hey Mike, have you ever tried silver sides for larger fish? Bait shops carry them live and you can also get frozen ones at the pet shop. If you could get them live for ally snappers that would be great so they can lure. They are quite shy usually which seems to be the case in your situation like you said so it would be great to have live fish. If not, i would still try frozen thawed, that might stimulate something. I have heard others say theirs will only eat at night also. I have two that will eat anytime in front of me. One (leucistic) that will eat most of the time and another that will never eat in front of me. Its tough. And you are right, uneaten feed fouls the water up something awful!!!!

Good luck!
