Shedding problems? Male wanting to breed?

Krystal19_85 Nov 12, 2004 11:39 AM

OK, almost 2 years ago I bought a big beautiful male BP who was (I was told) about 3 years old. He was (and still is) big enough to breed, but I haven't tried to breed him at all yet. Lately I noticed he has been REALLY active, ALOT more than usual. I thought the rats were too close and when the tank needed cleaning he could smell them. I cleaned the rats tank and moved them more out of his way, we also fed him. Didn't seem to change much, he is still more active than usual. The past couple days though, I have noticed him putting his tail (from the vent to the tip) up against the edge of his tub. I was just wondering what it means, if anything. It has been pretty constant for the past 2 days. Just curious.

On the other hand. We got a little female BP about 2 months ago. She was supposidly 4 months and less than 50 grams, not to mention mite ridden. We treated her for the mites and got her feeding regularly and she is about, I'm guessing, pushing 90 grams (she just ate, didn't want to weigh her). She went blue for a couple days (her first shed with us) and then stayed clear-eyed-foggy for almost a week. One day she finally started to shed, she got it all off of her head and stopped there. it has been a few days. We decided to feed her anyway as she really needs the food. She ate fine and it loosened the skin a little around her neck. She still doesn't seem to be able to get it off. We have been giving her soaks since she turned blue every now and then (not since she shed the head skin). Should we do something to help her? Any tips? Or just let her figure it out herself? She does seem to be quite the 'blonde'.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

From what I hear, they absolutely hate forced soaking. Either way...here's a fabulous tip I picked up on here, and it's a charm:

Grab a damp pillowcase, drop snake in, tie up, place in heated cage for a few hours. Presto!

She is pretty mellow. She doesn't seem to be stressed from the soakings, we always give her a spot where she can stop swimming and just rest. I have tried the towel thing, maybe I will try the pillowcase, I forgot about that one. Thanks.
