thereptile Jun 30, 2003 03:34 PM

hey,
i was wondering what i could use to make a substrate that will allow for burrowing. What ive got right now is this mix of coconut bedding from trex and bedabeast which looks very nice. I figured this prolly wont hold so I have about 120 lbs of playsand i could mix in. WOuld this work?

also what is the turey diet made of? turkey slices? chunks of meat? what? how is itprepared? thnx alot

Only one way to find out reptile. built4spd13 answered a very similar question just a few posts down. Playsand with some loam (dirt) mixed in your existing bedding will probably work just fine. If not, you can just keep adding to the recipe until you find a combination that works well for your monitor.

Why not use plain old dirt? Also,The San Diego Zoo developed and tested a turkey based diet a number of years ago for use with their Komodo Dragon breeding program. The "recipe" is 2.5 pounds of ground turkey (we buy it in frozen one pound blocks at 89 cents at the grocery store), 22.5 grams of bone meal, and one half Centrum vitamin tablet (crushed). Mix well, feed to lizards.

Check below posts and the archives for the dirty stuff.

Some keepers use the turkey mulch others don't. Most will tell you the same thing WHOLE PREY ITEMS ONLY!!!! You ensure proper health and vitamins this way. Rodents, chicks, and bugs maybe expensive but that is the way the ball bounces when you own a monitor. The choice is truely up to you though. What works for you and what keeps the monitor healthy.
Good luck!

Can they burrow & eat at the same time? Is it healthy? Where do I get some?

Doesnt work it holds moisture but so does spagnum moss. Use dirt (yes your monitor knows the difference). Turkey no stick to whole animal foods they are a world better for the animal and are cheaper.

basically what they said.. you want something that can hold moisture so it can hold a shape, and not have a lot of free floating particles in the air. but not soaking wet either, or you get mold and other nasties. Usually a mix of sand and dirt works well.
