Pics of my first Cham (injured Oustalets)

Lyn Nov 12, 2004 01:37 PM

I've admired Chameleons for years. I picked a bit of a challenge for my first one, but I'm already head over heals for her and I've only had her for 4 hours. She's awesome. If you read my post a while back it had the whole story. In a nutshell, she arrived at my local store with very bad trauma to her mouth. She was not able to be put up for sale due to her poor health. The store manager personally took her home and saved her life. Sadly her cagemate did not make it, she had similar injuries. But this little gal pulled through with the manager's love and care. She could not keep her and mentioned to me that she needed a home. I picked her up this morning. She'll need continued daily treatment for her mouth injury for quite some time. But she is alert, active, eating good, and the injury is much improved from what it was. Hard to believe when you see the pics that she was worse than this. Her treatment is consisting of Hydrogen Peroxide, followed by Betadine, then a covering of Neosporin. So far the infection has cleared up, and the excess buildup around her mouth is starting to fall off. We don't dare pull it off for fear of tearing her skin. In the places where it's fallen off on it's own, the skin underneath is healthy and looks good. She'll likely bear permanent scars from her ordeal, but should eventually look and feel much better. She could be a poster child against the poor conditions that wild caught animals endure during import. I don't want to start a debate on the topic, I'm sure it's been done a billion times. It makes me sick the conditions the animals go through and I look forward to a day when the Captive Bred Chameleon industry will grow to the point that they will stop importing. I did not pay any money for my new Cham, so I don't feel I've supported the practice by adopting her. Does make me feel bad to look at her and wish she was still back in Madagascar though. Here are some pics of my new girl. I've named her Cera after the little Triceritops in The Land Before Time childrens movie series.

I think she's beautiful. Course I'm a tad partial...

She climbs right onto your hand if you put your arm into the enclosure. Has no fear of people.

I have not done her treatment yet, but the manager said she sits real still for it and doesn't try to pull away, so it must not hurt her at least.

Like I said, hard to believe her mouth was much worse than this when she arrived at the store. I do not know what wholesaler they bought her from, amazing someone had the gall to ship an animal in such a sorry state. I'm thankful that they did or she would have died there, I'm sure the wholesaler was not doing anything to treat her injury.

Here you can see where some of the buildup has fallen off and the skin underneath looks pretty good.

I'll keep taking and posting pics during her recovery, hoping to have some pretty dramatic before/after shots in a few months. I look forward to the joy of caring for such an amazing animal. Still getting used to her looking at me with only one eye while the other one is busy looking around at other stuff. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for looking at my pics...

She IS lovely! and so is her name

It is heartbreaking and yes, the thread has taken place but hopefully it won't this time and minimize her needs and your care. Glad she ended up in good and caring hands.

Ouch! That is terrible! Did the vet take an x-ray of her head/jaw by any chance? Severe infections like that can erode into the bone. Just something to be aware of. You could use those pics to file animal cruelty against the wholesaler too. She looks VERY round in the belly. I'd weigh her and start watching for egg outlines just in case. She might have become gravid during her ordeals or in the holding facility. Good luck with her, she's beautiful.

Lyn Nov 14, 2004 09:15 AM

I just got her on Friday so have not gotten her to my vet yet. I'm going to call on monday and try to get an appt for this coming Friday or Saturday. I'm wondering if some oral antibiotics might be in order. The projections on her face are not all just buildup, most of the ones left are her actual skin on the outside, something hard under the skin. Don't know if that's a result of the infection getting into her bones or what it is. Those will never "fall off" but maybe with oral antibiotics it can cure from the inside? Do they have to anesthetize her for Xrays? I don't think she'd sit still on her own. She's eating good. I just fed her some vitamin dusted crickets (I do vitamins once a week and calcium a few times during the week) and she started to eat right away. I love watching her eat. She has really good aim, even when the crickets are moving around. I gave her a nest container just in case. The store got her about 3 months ago. So she hasn't been with a male in at least that long, probably longer. She came in with another female, not a male. Don't know how long they could hold eggs for. She's shown no interest in digging or checking out the nest area yet. Maybe the vet could determine if she has eggs. I'll let everyone know what the vet says. Cross fingers he has an opening Fri or Sat. I'm going to email him photos ahead of time.

Kim is the one who I spoke of in my post, she saved her life and has been treating her in her home. Sadly the other one didn't make it.

wow, thats weird. when i saw her at markheims before kim took her home, she was in real bad shape. She had some sort of puss on both her eyes that formed a cone. i would have been 100% sure that she was not going to make it. im so glad to see that she did make it. she looks 1000 times better than when i saw her last at markheims. what a small world we live in. markheimks is such a great pet store, its the only pet store ive ever been to were they actually properly care for the pets. I ve bought all my leopards there and they are all thriving.

Yes, it is a small world! I agree I've been very happy with Markheims. Several of the animals in my sig came from there. If you are a member of the WNY Herp Club I've probably met you. If not, have you considered joining? Link is in my sig if you want to check it out. Did you go to our show this past September?
