hognose aggression

reptileking85 Nov 12, 2004 02:35 PM

I was told my a local snake keeper that hogs are amongst the most aggressive snakes. I dont have a strong argument, since I am unaware of this keepers history. I was told that they are probably more aggressive then Emerald Tree Pythons and Retics. I've also heard that hog nose venom is worse then that of a Black Mamba. Again I dont have exact sources, thats what I have heard.

Hognoses of the Heterodon genus (which are the ones I assume you are refering) can put on quite a bluff, but a bluff is all it is. They can be "aggresive" (read the 'Hissing' post below), but they are probably the most difficult snake to actually get bitten by.

As for their venom, it is NOWHERE NEAR that of a mamba, or any front fang venomous snake. Baring a rare allergic reaction, at most mild swelling and itching may occur. Heterodons are harmless.

If I were you, I would never again deal with the source who provided that information. If you don't mind, please tell us where you got that information.

If he was indeed referring to Heterodon, this is sad misinformation. Are you sure he wasn't referring the the Hognose Viper?

If the man said emerald tree pythons that is all you needed to know he was full of it. Some old world hognose snakes are slighlty more venomous but nothing serious. Also, if you look at a hognose snakes behavior you will see it is more a defensive behavior than agression. They are intimidated by everything. If you want to see an agressive snake go play with a coachwhip.
