pothos vs. ficus

veiledchamlver Nov 12, 2004 08:10 PM

I've heard good and bad about both these plants. but wut does everyone prefer. I don't know if i want a plant that could blind my cham or if i want a plant that is a little toxic that my cham might eat.

Well, I have both and I like them, mostly because I haven't killed either one yet. (As opposed to my schefflera) Pothos I think are nearly impossible to kill.

I don't see my cham climbing the pothos, it's more for cover. He will climb in the ficus.

I haven't had any problems with the ficus "milk" in his eyes.
As for eating the plants, can't help you there as I have a panther. Maybe if you give your veiled enough other greens to eat, he won't chow on the pothos(?).

Good luck!

Having three veields, you should really know this man.

No celery please, it's too hard, and even the greens are very strange things. Someone else may have more info on that, but IMO i wouldn't feed celery.

I don't have any sites to give you so here is a brief list of beneficial veggies.

Kale
Collard greens
Mustard greens
Romaine lettuce (three above are much better than this)
Carrot shavings (not too often, once every few weeks at MOST)
Grapes (green or red, seedless of course)
Strawberries (the red colour is very appetizing! don't feed these too often, high acid in them, once every week and a half at most.)
Cantaloupe (thin slices)
Mango (thin)
Oranges (not often, high acid)

That's all most people ever feed their chams, and its all you should need to. There's lots of other stuff to feed them, i couldnt think of them or didn't know about them.

Try a google search on "safe vegetables chameleons"

Or try adcham.com, good site. They may have a safe fruit/veggie list.

You can hand feed or attatch the preceding vegetables or fruits to a place close to a favourite perch. Use a paper clip, or those little black paper holding things you get at office stores. You can buy veggie clips for animals but theyre pricy and do the same things as the listed options.

I use to remember but i forgot. I tried collard and mustard greens before but they didn't like them. And now out of no where my boy tried to eat his fake plant and the only thing i had was some celery with a couple of leafs on it. Thanx

I put hibiscus in with the pothos in hopes of the chams choosing the hibiscus & it's flowers (they LOVE it) over the pothos... (previously they have only had hibiscus, so we'll see what they think now). My ficus is still a twig, so I havn't tried it yet...

yes! hibiscus is such a great plant. you can get small or large. I have one in her cage and the other under lights with 5 flowers and many buds. I live in cold NH (it snowed yesterday!) but I can have one going all winter by trading them off under lights.

Luna eats both with no problem. Typically they will not ingest enough. Pothos are hanging plants whereas your ficus would be the main (or one of the main) plants (hiding, climbing, sleeping, etc)

As for fruits and veggies check out this site
