HELP!! AWOL Leo... =(

mdngtrain Nov 12, 2004 08:29 PM

If you were a resourceful little leo hatchling, and you managed to escape your enclosure, where would you go? Eddie went AWOL sometime last night & I just noticed today when I went to feed him & all 3 mealies were untouched... Prt of me wants to think the dog got him & made it quick, as opposed to him falling down one of the many little holes in this place...
I really hope he shows up, as I got very attatched to the little guy in just 2 weeks... =(

theres hope
do you have a basement? uz if you do hes there, or the lowest part of your house.
if he was well fed/healthy before he should be able to live without food for a few months. i kno that sounds ludacris, but ive lost 2 geckos before, my male and his sister, and his sister was missing for 6 months and when i found her she was running around and still looked healthy and was fat( ???) lol. and my male i lost i was holding him and fell alseep and woke up the next day and ouldnt find him, then like 2 months later i saw my something crawling on my pet pitty(pit bull) and sure enough it was my male, fat as ever.

My first leo got away from me too, and i found him in a nintendo cart case (ha). Chances are he/she will scurry to the closest dark spot available. What I would do is (ask your family to help you with this) close all the doors in your house and stuff towels in the door crack. every day conduct a search in each of the rooms, looking in dark low areas. Dark is the key.

When i found my gecko he was less than 10 feet from where he hopped away, but my boyfriend and I ripped apart the entire room.

You know this might sound silly but maybe set up a trap for the little guy. Lowes sells NON-Killing mouse traps. It's like if they scurry to a certain part of the trap it'll close a door behind it. They are like 7-8 bucks. Just fill the trap with waxworms and stuff he's really going to like. Come to think of it, I'd get a few traps. Put one in the middle of the floor and one in a dark area of the room (a place where it is ALWAYS dark.) And I'd probably put a few in each room.

Keep us updated, and try the no kill trap. Remember though if your little guy is tiny, ask a sales associate if they carry small traps for mice, or moles (moles are smaller than mice right) tell them you wants a no-kill trap and just tell them it's for a missing pet. they'll help you.

I looked for him again this morning... unfortunatly, I have 2 major things working against me: 1) I have dogs that like to eat little things that scurry & 2) It snowed yesterday... so I think it's a bit too cold for him even in the apartment. There are a few holes that I think he may have scurried into, but they are holes to the radiator pipes (the house is ancient) or holes into the walls (I will never find him in there!). So if the dogs did not get him, then he will freeze to death if I don't find him soon... and he's just a baby, no more than a few grams... very little fat storage in his tail, so even if he survives the other 2 hazards, he's got a lack of food problem...
I will def. try the trap tho... I hope they make ones that can be tripped by 3 grams... Thanks for the suggestions. Keep your fingers crossed that we find him.

any luck today?

mdngtrain Nov 15, 2004 05:38 PM

No luck yet. I left the cage out 2 nights in a row, and still nothing. I did go look in the basement, and I guess it's good news that I did not find him there... but it's warm, full of bugs to eat, and full of hiding places, so maybe later on he will show up. Other than that, he is probablly in the apartment somewhere (a million places to hide here too).

gurnham4, thanks for standing up for me, but I'm not a kid (sometimes I wish I was to avoid all the bills!). It was my lack of planning that let the little guy escape =( Thanks tho.

you shouldn't be nagged at for having an accident. It' just stupid.

I've never had my leo escape like that before (although sometimes she darts off my hand and runs behind the couch).

Although there was this one time my brother's ex-wife's (when she was his wife) mali uromastyx, buddy, went missing. He lifted up the cage lid and slid out of there. They were gone and I tore up the room and I yelled at the dog because I thought she could've eaten him. I looked behind the couch and there he was. Safe and sound.

Then my brother's (same brother) female vieled chamelion went missing. She climbed up a vine in her enclosure and went through a whole in the top of it. We dug through the substrate with no luck and my brother thought the male killed her and ate her. Next day my brother checked under his bed and there she was!

I think if you keep looking hard enough you'll find the little fellow. I wish you the best of luck in finding him!

What I want to know is how these leos escape???? They should make a forum here to teach people how to properly cage their reptiles..... I think it is rediculous that these lizards are getting out of their enclosers...... I just dont get it.....

MdngtRain Nov 13, 2004 12:40 PM

He escaped b/c he is in a temp. enclosure until he gets big enough to put with my other leo... I noticed the night before that the top I had made for his tupperware was not on correctly, so I adjusted it, realizing that he might escape with the gap there... It's not the greatest top tho & it must have popped up again... Now I'm stuck looking for him...

gurnham4 Nov 13, 2004 03:45 PM

Shame on you. Accidents happen and no one is perfect. Pointing your fingers does not help a thing. Do what we were all taught when we were five: If you don't have something nice or HELPFUL to say, then don't say anything at all.

GreggMM Nov 13, 2004 06:03 PM

Poor keeping skills are getting out of hand..... Shame on people that do not take the time, money, and effort to properly house their reptiles..... I will say what I want when I want..... It is a public board..... If you do not like what I have to say, dont read or respond..... It is that simple..... An escape is just an example of bad husbandry skills..... There is no reason why a reptile should be able to get loose if it is housed correctly...... I have not had an escape in over 20 years of keeping reptiles..... It is just rediculous that it happens..... Especialy now with all of the equipment on the market today.....

tim5580 Nov 13, 2004 10:19 PM

LOL the only equipment I ever needed was tape, or $1.79 screen top locks, you know what I mean, it clamps over the lip and makes it tight. Hard for me to get them off sometimes. I guess I'd go more high tech if I had something that justified it. Maybe invest in a heavy book.

My point exactly...... It does not take much to secure a leo properly.....

gurnham4 Nov 14, 2004 03:42 PM

It's a KID who lost their gecko. It happens, and since you weren't helping the situations then the post was pointless. If you want to publicly promote yourself as a jerk, go ahead.

Put his cage on the floor with a little walkway up into it. He might recognize it and think food or a safe place to hide. Just put some food in there and maybe a treat. Worth a try.
