my snake is slithering with his head sideways

kb1 Nov 12, 2004 09:30 PM

now that i think of it, this might be a little hard to explain. I just caught a snake about a week ago on my front pourch. I believe it is a garter snake or a similar variety. It has a funny habit though, it either can't or won't slither straight. It doesn't slither sideways, but rather on his side, and not his whole side, but only his head and maybe the firstinche. He is a tiny thing.I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this and if you could help me. I would really like to keep him.

Sounds like the result of a birth defect or deformity. If you can get him eating, he can probably survive and if it's the result of an injury he may even recover. I'd try small food items like guppies or worms as his neck problem may make swallowing bigger items difficult. If he's got good weight you may want to let him go a week or so without food to see if he improves because if it is the result of an injury the strain of eating may make it worse.
