Things I have fed my frogs...long post

burmaboy Nov 12, 2004 09:32 PM

Along with bug constrictors, I keep Pac Man ( men? ) frogs, And Pixie Frogs...
This is what they eat when they come to my buffet table...lol
Nightcrawlers, Superworms, Krill, Shrimp, Goldfish, Rosy Reds, Silversides minnows, Crickets, Tobacco Hornworms, Silkworms.
Fuzzy mice, Pinky Mice, Rat Pups. Fish Filets( so far only catfish). I'm certain I've also forgotten some of the food items.
I find the Pac Man frogs to be a tad...just a tad fussier than the Pixie frogs. But that does'nt say much, the dang Pixie Frogs eat anything.
I keep them next to some turtles, and they amuse themeselves by watching the turtles, and when I feed the turtles, the Pixies go crazy trying to get the food they see going by.
Thr pacman frogs will pass up certain food items.
The Hornworms were spit out, the Pixie Frogs went berserk over them.More so than any other kind of food. I also saw the best growth spurt feeding these.Too bad the price is so prohibitive.
Silversides were devoured even though it's saltwater fish.
With all my herps, I try to vary the diet.
My frogs are my fun herps...they amuse just by their eating habits. I enjoy having them around.
My snakes lizards, and turtles are my serious herps.
Although I have one Albino burm that is actually kind of a clown.
He stays loose destroying my herp room while I work in there.
Try a variety of foods, your frogs will appreciate it

I would suggest skipping the goldfish (too high in saturated fats) and the fish filets (not balanced as it isn't a whole prey item).
Silversides are a good choice as they are low in saturated fats but offering frozen/thawed fish too frequently can lead to thiamine deficiencies.

Just some comments,

Fish fillets are seldom fed. Just a nice source of protein now and then...as when my turtles wont eat them.
Goldfish too are an infrequent meal.I cant be bothered keeping them. I prefer the larger rosey reds when I can get them.Or even better still a source of cheap mollies.
The silversides I feed, when I can get them are fresh caught.
I live on the coast. I catch em by the buckets full!
Occasionally I will feed frozen silversides, but they are actually disgusting when thawed
The slightest bit of leftovers really stink.
