question about coloration for red w. coachwhips

snakesdjf Nov 12, 2004 09:57 PM

hello, i have 2yr old c/b red w. coachwhip and was wondering if the black bands below the head usually turn red also. they seem to be turning a reddish brown. i know its probably a silly question but are the colors at two yrs old pretty much permanent. are some red w. coahwhips completely red at a 1 1/2? what also raised a little suspician is that when i purchased him a as a cb yearling, he was already about 2 feet and seemed a little thick bodied for just a yearling. do these guys grow this fast. thanks dj

Probably not.

Usually at a year they are more a pinkish orange coloration if they are going to be a red. And newborns are usually orange. The marking behind the head can be a burnt red or stay black or brown. But usually a real red has burnt red crossbars. And at 2 years old I doubt it would have a its full color. It would still be a little choppy. William H.

Well hey Dave! How are you doing man? Stupid me and I didn't even pay attention to your post. I'm glad to hear the buttermilks are doing so well. You will really have some good snakes as they grow. Will be tame etc. Seeing how easy buttermilks are to start out. I may do some breeding with them! Some people call them ugly, I totally disagree, I think that spotted pattern is just great! Send me some pics sometime! I would also enjoy seeing your red. William H.

P.S.
Hey post some feedback for me on the fauna BOI sometime!

Hi William, they are doing great, and if you breed more buttermilks this season i would definately be interested in some more. Have you ever had any with extreme white blotching? i will post more feedback on the bio. did you read the info i posted on the bio about you a while ago? i will post again, thanks again dave, stay in touch

Hatchlings usualy start a slight green! A nice red specimin will start to show pink on the nape of the neck ending year one. Year two they will be a pink wash. They will be colored up by year three but will become brighter till about five! Good Luck.
