Can an adult black milk live its life in a 55 gallon (long) tank???

I know they get around 5.5 to 6.5 feet long most of the time and my tank is 4 feet long. And I know the males grow larger than the females, so should I get a female or would a male be fine living its full life in a 55 gal (long) tank????
