Speckleds are one of the few snakes out there that (in my honest opinion) are far more beautiful when viewed close-up
Only then can most people REALLY appreciate their true beauty. This is because this snake's beauty lies in the evenly spaced yellow spots on a black background! In order for most of us to appreciate this kind of beauty, we must view them from a little closer than most snakes. Ie: most snakes look the same when viewed from any distance: you notice the bands don't change on a kingsnake, the stripes of a garter snake don't change, BUT when looking at a speckled king from far away their appearance changes to a somewhat less brilliant yellow because in our eyes the small spots (because of their size) and the black background color seem to merge into one less-than-yellow overall color. BUT some of us, like me (with great vision) think that Speckled Kings ARE beautiful snakes regardless! I have bred them in the past and will do so again starting next year (now that i have more time)! They are awesome snakes! By the way I like your almost 5 foot male he's NICE. He's got some big dpeckles on him!

Passport: Since you're from La. How about posting a pic of a southern (from the coastal marshes) Louisiana specimen? You know, the ones that have that bright flourescent orange belly that starts to creep up the sides of the body? I used to have some of those as well as the inland evenly speckled ones. As soon as I get mine next spring I will post some pics!

Here's a TX animal showing that the holbrooki X splendida intergrade can be very attractive as well.

Thanks for the pic! I have found some like that when I was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. I found them from an area from Killeen - San Antonio! NICE Specimen! You know, some of those S. Texas Splendida are very nice too.

They are underpriced because they are way underappreciated. I only paid $25 for this very easy to maintain specimen and I would have paid a lot more if I had too. No getula collection is complete without one.
