cham hydration technique

alanvines Jun 30, 2003 04:19 PM

Hey, I put a rodent waterer hanging bottle in with my outside male Jackson's and he uses it. He pushes the ball in with his tongue like a hamster or rat. This is an excellent way to give water to chams. I made sure it had a drop of water hanging for a while til he noticed it. Did I make a new discovery or is this old hat?

I give my Jackson's, Jack, water with a water bottle occasionally. I saw a picture of someone doing that with some other kind of chameleon, so I thought I'd try it with Jack and it worked. The caption said chameleons will drink from a water bottle because they're attracted to the shiny metal ball on the end.

If your cham uses a bottle great, but some cautions for you...not all chams will do this. Sometimes chams change the way they prefer to drink. If the ball gets clogged or stuck the cham has no way to loosen it and may not fight it long enough to drink enough. This does not replace spraying for general humidity and washing out eyes. I'd say its one way to provide water when you are not around to spray during the day, but I would NOT rely on it only.
