Cage Building Info (Triad)

purduecg Nov 13, 2004 10:48 AM

I have put together the cut list I used for my cage, and a simple diagram that shows the way most of the pieces relate to each other. I want to put together a step by step, but have not had time yet. Feel free to ask me any questions, I will help as much as I can.

Thanks. I'm gonna have to wait until I can find someone with the tools to do this (or did you even have to use tools?).

I'm gonna build probably 2 or 3 of these for the animals my brother and I have.

Thanks again!

I had everything cut at a home improvement center. You need a place that will do exact cuts though, lowes, menards, etc probably wont work, but anyplace with a real woodworking area will be great. Having the wood cut was CHEAP, $10 or less. The only tool i used was a variable speed drill, for pre-drilling holes (which i didn't do but was recommended to me), and for screwing in the screws. These are not very expensive, $30 or less, and they are just generally useful to have.

Oh we have a drill. In a house with 3 males there should be at LEAST 1 drill in the house somewhere ha ha ha.

My mom's like we don't have the equipment for it and I'm like yes, but we do have a Home Depot less then 20 minutes from the house. I plan on building the terrarium upstairs for Iris. Then getting a 40 breeder (or bigger) for Hades my bearded dragon and putting the breeder tank on top of Iris's tank. That should give me as much floor space (or more) then what I have now.

Thanks.

I would recommend finding someplace that will do more exact cuts than Home depot (HD) will. Look for lumber yards that advertise having "mills" onsite. Or cabinet makers. The cuts they do at HD *may* work, but they are rarely very exact, and may lead to some gaps in the cage.

If you can tolerate the obstruction of the view, you may want to put another 1x1x29in support in the front of the cage, just to minimize any potential for sagging over the long term, or adding a 2x4 piece, as an extra support on the upper inside of the tank, behind the "upper front".

Building the cage was a ton of fun, very "empowering" too. Though I am never one who turns away from a home improvement project. I am 28 years old and my parents still will not buy me power tools for Christmas...

Well my birthday is this Thursday and I'm going to put half the money I get in my bank(saving for improvements on cages) and then any Christmas money I get will also go for cage improvements.

I know for a fact we have a drill. Thing is there's no spare room in our house or even in the garage to polyeurothane the enclosure. We have birds in the garage and the rest of the house is just, well it's open we hardly ever close the doors inside the house(except bathroom doors, and when we change clothes in our bedrooms) so the smell would lingere throughout the house.

So for now I guess I will have to wait until it gets warmer out (that'll be around May).
