ALLY Hatchling Eye Infection, Any advice?

Doug-P Nov 13, 2004 11:08 AM

I've kept snappers for a few years now, and FINALLY got a pair of Ally hatchlings. One has one eye that has gotten infected. Actually, it looks like the area around the eye is infected. there is some swelling and a white-ish coloration. it has been a week, I have been using flukes eye wash. It is eating, and active. The water is kept clean. It is being kept alone, to avoid the other ally from getting it.
If anyone has been thru this and has any suggestions, I would greatly appretiate it.

the turtle eyewash should do the trick you can also try a sulfar bath they sell it in petstores, just keep changing the water, good luck, the sulfar also comes in tabs shapped like a turtle but the rince is good from the start then you can drop thr tabs in to prevent it from reocurring,if the eye itself is clear you can dab neosporin on it its a good antibacterial

Thanks, I have used the sulfa turtle tabs also. I'm not familiar with the "bath" though, I'll look into that more, and maybe give it a try.

The sulfa bath is made by Zoo Med. There are probably other variations by different manufactures though. You can buy it at lllreptile.com and other online reptile supply companies. It comes with a measuring scoop and you measure your amount, add to water, and let turtle(s) soak for some time.

Thanks to those who responded with advice, and info. I appretiate it.
The infection got alot better after about a week. I had a hard time getting the little ally to eat from the begining. It ate but never consistantly. I bought 2 allys at the same time. The other did not eat consistantly either. This last week the one with out the infection started eating better, and the one with, stopped eating.
I have only had these turtles for two weeks as of saterday the 20th.
I left town on the 20th for the holidays. I have a friend stopping by to take care of my critters. I took the sick fella with me. I figured I could care for it better, and also didnt want to burden my friend with a sick turtle. Well, long story short, the little ally didnt make it. It just got run down with the infection, and couldnt get its energy back. It's not in the disign for them all to make it, and sometimes you do everything you can, and it dosnt work.
My first experiance with allys hasnt been a easy one. The 2nd one is doing well, and is wiggling his lure. What impressive critters.
