baby garter, what to feed?

Zach_MexMilk Nov 13, 2004 01:29 PM

my dad recently brought home a baby garter that the cat was about to get to. i have it in a cage with oaoer towel bedding, a bit of moist sphagnum moss, a hide area, and a water bowl. its about 4 inches-5inch long and really, really thin. i tried feeding it some worms and a baby slender salamander, but to no avail. what should i try? im more of a lampropeltis guy, so the babies i work with are usually a bit larger.

It would depend a bit on what kind of garter you have. Where are you located and what does the snake look like? I've never had any trouble getting young garters to take fish. I like to use mosquito fish / feeder guppies. I put them in a shallow glass bowl in the tank. The movement usually gets the snake's attention. If your snake is a recent acquisition, give it a week or so to settle in and avoid handling it until you get it established and feeding; also, give it plenty of hiding places so that it feels secure. Right now many snakes in the wild are preparing to hibernate; if your snake is amoung them, this could explain its lack of feeding response. To counter this, try providing a hot spot via an undertank heater.
