What would be the best outdoor substrate for Redfoots?

sned25271 Nov 13, 2004 04:13 PM

Hi,

I am in the process of building an outdoor habitat for my pair of Redfoots. I was wondering what would be the best substrate for them. If you could post pics of your habitats, that would be great.

Thanks

I would use cypress mulch. Try and loosen the soil in the pen, maybe with a rake or you could rent a gas powered tiller. Then just throw a bunch of cypress in there and mix around, should be great. I use this for my redfoots inside as well (except the dirt is store bought topsoil).

Oh yeah, you could also grow some weeds and stuff in part of the enclosure, for that part you may want to just leave the soil tilled but not add the cypress mulch.

I've used a peat moss/top soil mixture as a great additive to soils in my enclosures. It helps greatly with moisture rention and it loosens hard packed soils. It's also cheap and does a great job. Maybe try that..
