Can BRBs be housed together?

minidrag Nov 13, 2004 06:22 PM

Hey,

I got my little girl a year ago and I've found her to be like M&Ms. I don't think I can have just one. Is it okay to house BRBs together if they're pretty much the same size?

I've seen and heard some rather awful cannibal stories with other types of snakes, but I think the only way I can have two adults right now is to keep them in the same enclosure (lack of room for two large snake enclosures). I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I've seen some lovely little babies on the forum. Jeff Clark's babies spring instantly to mind. I'd keep the baby in a separate smaller enclosure till he's about Pip's size.

Of course if they cannot be kept together, I would find a way to make do.

Thanks for your input.

minidrag,
...I keep lots of my BRBs two to a cage. BRBs do not commonly harm each other but it does occasionally happen. This is especially possible at feeding time. I have never had one BRB harm another except for a feeding accident several years ago with little ones. If you have two snakes in a cage and one of them gets sick it can pass the proble onto the other one. If one passes a messy stool or regurgitates you may not be able to tell which one it was.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks.

My plan is to feed them separately. I always feed Pip in a bag or separate container from her cage, and the same thing would happen with a second snake. I just think it's safer for me and for the snakes this way.

I also planned on keeping the new snake in a separate container for a while because I wanted to get a baby, and don't really want to put wildly different sized snakes in the same cage. I also want to quarantine the new snake, even if he's healthy. No sense in stressing out a little guy by tossing him in with a big girl.

I'd rather they were roughly the same size first. I figure they'd get along better that way.

As long as they are able to be kept together at some point, I can plan on getting a baby to add to my family. He'd live in a plastic critter keeper for a while. Meanwhile, Pip can continue to enjoy her current tank.

minidrag,
...Oooops, I forgot to mention quarantine. Quarantines of at least three months are a good idea with all boids.
