worms and moths in seed - what do I do?

tandy10 Nov 13, 2004 06:45 PM

Does anyone else have this problem and what do I do?

I have tiny worms and moths appearing daily in Quest's cage.

He has high quality millet seed in his cage.

Can these worms and moths make Quest sick?

How do I get rid of them?

I suggest having someone either hold him or you put him in a smaller terrarium or a pet holder he can't get out of while you dump his substrate. We get millet seed for our birds and they always have moths and worms in them.

I think you should dump that millet substrate and get either just regular bird seed(no sunflower seeds) or washed playsand (as long as quest is not a baby).

I hope this gets rid of those pesky moths and worms.

people have suggested on here putting things in the freezer because it can kill the eggs or whatever is causing the worms and moths. i just looked up something really fast on the internet and it said to freeze it for three days.
hope that helps

I had many birds years ago, so I always had lots of seed. When I got it home I put it in coffee cans or ziplock bags and stored it in the freezer. You can freeze yours for 3 days before using it in the cage and this should solve the problem. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the advice. I am going to try freezing the seed.

I will let you know what happens.
