TAME baby water - Is it possible?

SPJ01 Nov 13, 2004 06:46 PM

Every baby water I have seen has been flighty as a baby. Not a biter but VERY hard to get a hold of and handle. I found one today that is about 18 inches and SUPER docile. It seems active, has good body weight, and flicks it's tongue while holding it. The odd part is that it will let you reach in, pick it up, and is very easy to handle. The thermometer in the cage under the heat lamp read just a hair under 90 and it had a large pool to swim in.
Are there actually tame babies or should I be looking for some illness that is not visibly apparent? The seller has told me that this monitor is always handled and even good with their kids.
Anyone ever seen a tame 18 inch salvator? My goal would be to raise this up and interact with it frequently to have a large monitor to add to presentations. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. He is holding the monitor for me until Monday for me to think about it.
Thanks.

I have seen super tame youngins around that size. The temp is a bit low, it should have a hot spot of around 130.

Could the "tameness" be from the lower temp? If the hot spot was raised to 130, would there be the possibility of the monitor now turning into an animal less than tolerant of human contact?

My black throat was orginally fairly docile at 30 inches or so when I got him, I doubled his food intake (even though he was not thin or under wieght) because he was always very ready for more food. Once I did this he began to grow very quikly and also began to start to say leave me alone. As he got bigger he almost just decided that he could handle himself and would only come out and be "freindly" when he wanted to. I think its great, he's healthy, very strong, growing and has a personality all of his own.

Calm monitors are out there. Even calm babies. The temp. you mention is low, so it may change it's attitude in a warmer enviroment. But typically they change attitude a bit in a new enviroment anyways.

The reason most babies are not calm is fear. Once they get oer that and build a trust they are fine. Some decide instead of fear they will just not accept you. It is all based on some level of trust and how tolerant they are of you.

There is no reason that it could not be calm, but there is that chance of it changing it's attitude in a new setup. If your ok with it possably changing from that calm monitor you see now into something else go for it. If your not ready to swim then do not jump off the boat.
