Tile board/Shower board

jmadams Nov 13, 2004 07:43 PM

I am biulding a cage for me Cal King. I want to use shower board/Tile board for the inside and the outside. I was going to make a frame with 1x1s and atatch the tile board to the frame and use a trim to clean up all the corners and use silicon to seal the edges on the inside. My questions are.

1. How do you attach the board without leaving ugly nails or screws? Would glue be stong enough to last a long time?

2. I am going to leave the bottom open on all sides but the front for air space. Can a UTH work on this stuff or would it be a safty hazard?

3. I quess this should have been question one, but do you think this type of cage would work, and do you have any suggestions. I have done this type of cage with plywood before, but i want this one to look good and not crappy like the ones I have done before.

Thanks in advance, and any suggestions are greatly apprecieated.

Joe

How big of a cage do you want? I may have a more simple suggestion.

Regardless, I'll answer #3...

I'm not a big fan of building frames from wood stock unless you're a fairly skilled carpenter. Since you're here asking questions I'm guessing you're not a skilled carpenter.

From my experience when novice cage builders work with plywood their results are better than when they try to tackle a light weight, frame-style cage.

Plywood can very attractive. Here's a cage I built from low quality, oak-laminated plywood. I had the cuts made at Home Depot and then I took the panels home and squared them up with my circular saw. No fancy tools required. I could have done the entire cage with my $49 circular saw but I needed to get the plywood down to a transportable size.
