Question about my (Petsmart) male albino.....

mmfrankford Nov 13, 2004 07:44 PM

I was reading one of the earlier posts, about where the leos came from that are purchased from Petsmart and Petco. Well I purchased my male leo(pic below)from Petsmart about three months ago. Here's really the question. I purchased him as you see him. An adult. Well I was wondering if it possible that sell retired breeders. Like a male that would possibly have no interest in breeding anymore. That sort of goes on to another question. The male has been placed shortly with the females, no breeding interest. Or at least I haven't seen that jump on them and mate reaction I've heard of with other's males. The females wave thier tails at him like they are annoyed by him and nip. Is it possible it is because it is winter (I live in Ohio)and I should try in the spring. All the leos are in thier own 10 gallon tanks and fat and healthy.
Thanks.

Maybe they sell them off, it's no use to them if it doesn't breed. No offense meant, but you sure it is a male? Maybe they sexed it wrong. But I am assuming you know how to sex them if you are trying to breed them. Or maybe it is just not in the mood. Only 2 things I could think of.

its not breeding season yet, leos dont breed year round, their breeding season starts in january and end mainly in july-september, none of my males want to breed either,

petsmart and petco dont breed there geckos to get the babies, the babies come from "whole salers" like gourmet rodent, their adults somtimes come from people who give them up, or from a whole saler

i know people with leos over 10 years old that still breed, there nothing to worry about

As a fellow breeder:
My males aren't interested right now either. I just keep them seperated and introduce them in January. Since its the off season neither the males or the females are going to want to breed. That's probably why the females are waving their tails at your male.

As a Petsmart employee:
All our reptiles are ordered from a few different companies that are owned by veterinarians and actually breed their own animals. The adults are usually around a year old when we get them. Our company never accepts private breeders' animals or "drop offs". If an animal is ababndoned we do not re sell it it goes to a rescue where it is rehibilitated (if neccessary) and adopted out.

Good luck next year with breeding!

Thanks for some of the responses. Well that makes more sense about the breeding season. I will try again in the spring and yeah he definitely is a male.
