Dorsal spike

mizar 21 Nov 13, 2004 08:20 PM

Today when we bath our iguana to help him shedding, we find that he have several layer of old skin on his spikes. He was a rescued one so i think that his previous owner have a bit neglected him. My question is we do remove a lot of old skin and still have more to remove but if a spike broke, does it regrow ?

Nope, it will not regrow. BUt you should nt be worried about it. Just keep soaking him, and if the spike fall off, he won t suffer or anything. Missing spikes do not mean poor health.
But keep soaking him. The old skin probably will come out.
Good luck,

Dan

Spikes do regrow in some cases... I know this for fact I have seen it with my own two eyes if you are having shed problems boost the humidity in your igs enclosure and soak it a couple times a day until the shed is soft enough for you to gently brush it off with a towel or between your fingers... DO NOT twist the spike.

This is what I did when I got my rescued Ig with about 4 layers of shed on his spikes....
I soaked him really good, pouring water over the spikes and adding warm water as it cooled off. When he wanted to get out of the tub I would put him back in her cage and put some baby oil on my fingers and rub it on the spikes that had layers of extra skin. I did this every day for a week and almost all the spikes were cleared off by then.
Good luck, Dove

I have also seen spikes regrow...Irwin lost two of them, not sure how as he was with a different owner. But, they did regrow. They just aren't as long as the others yet. So, as far as I know (with my own experience) spikes can apparently regrow. (Although I'm not sure what conditions it takes to allow them to regrow)

Give the ig daily baths to soak. Try and get the old shed off when he's wet. ome people also use mineral oil (small amount) on the old shed to loosen it. Be careful, though, spikes do NOT grow back!

If the spikes have enough tissue left they may very well grow back... I have seen it... Trust me... Sometimes they do grow back... sometimes they dont it all depends. But as with all things the prevention is always easier to deal with than the problem
