slugs as feeders for red-bellied snakes

cdneh Nov 13, 2004 08:35 PM

hey everyone

i've kind of hit a wall. i've been looking for some distributor which would (for some odd reason) be able to supply live garden slugs. google is hopeless, all i can find is information on pesticides, so i thought maybe someone here would at least be able to point me in the right direction. its getting cold up here (toronto) and i just dont want to have to feed my snakes worms all winter. any ideas on where i might find some?

Why not just hibernate it like it would be doing right now?

The only thing I can recommend is to go out and catch a bunch if you still can. If you keep them moist and feed them things like collard greens, romain lettude, etc. they do great. I guess I'm lucky to be living in central California. I have no problem finding slugs year round for my sharp-tail. If you can't feed our snake over the winter and he's got good body weight, you may also want to consider hibernating him.

I'm about an hour west of toronto and i have a red wriggler compost worm farm thingy i just feed them to my snakes and that will last them throught the winter, after i just switch back to slugs so i don't make too big a dent in my farm (not gonna happen but still) also my worm farm tends to breed fruit flies too.
how many red bellies do you have? i have one that's from this year (small) do you have any pics? always love to see snake pics

I don't have any red-bellies, but I do have a sharp-tailed snake. Sharp-tails are also slug eaters. I've got some pics of mine posted in a thread a little ways down.

You can order slugs from Carolina Biological's website. They are a little pricey but they helped me get through last winter when I needed slugs for my red belly & northern brown snakes. I've since converted them to eating chopped up Canadian nightcrawlers which I get at Big Apple Herpetological. Anyway, Carolina Biological sells slugs in packages of 3 or 12 and they send them out right away.
