Marbled salamander behavior

cdog222 Nov 14, 2004 12:52 AM

Hello,

I've had a marbled salamander for about 4 months or so now, and although he still has a good appetite and appears healthy, he has become a lot less active over the last couple of months. Rarely do I see him leave his favorite hiding spot, whereas he used to wander from place to place - to dip in the water (very shallow, of course), to burrow for a short while, etc. Could anyone here provide me with a little feedback on their typical behavior?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Ambystomids are relatively inactive salamanders in captivity and I strongly suspect in the wild given that they tend to remain within a single burrow or burrow system outside of the breeding system.
To further support this idea marble salamanders have relatively slow metabolisms.

There is a care sheet under species accounts on the caudata culture web site.
