My Beardy is Sleeping ALL THE TIME... something wrong?

Rimstan Jun 30, 2003 05:14 PM

My Beardy Zeph, which I have had for about 2 years now has been staying under his log sleeping since about December or January.

I get him out when I can and feed him and he eats and he looks very alert. I knew at first he was just doing his routine hibernating.

Its June now, and almost July and everytime I get him out he wants to go right back under his log and sleep again. When I get him out he runs around for a little bit looks very healty and puts his night cap back on and goes to bed.

He was treated for parisits several months ago and he got clear after awhile.

Any Ideas?

My 2 year old male beardie, Ojay, has been brumating off and on since November! I thought he was done brumating in May. Sometimes he will come out for a week or a few days, eat a few worms, then back to sleep he goes. He hasn't been interested in veggies or greens at all. He will drink occasionally from a dropper if I drip in on his nose. So I know he's not dehydrated. He doesn't look like he's lost any weight, but I'll weigh him tonight to make sure. I had a fecal done on him before he started brumating in November and it was clear. I just can't seem to keep him out and awake. My temps are good (105/80) and I leave the lights on for 14 hours. We moved recently but he was doing this before we moved. I'm not sure what to make of this either. Maybe his temps aren't as consistant as I thought. We have the stick up thermometers in his cage, but they aren't as accurate as a digital thermometer.

If anyone has some ideas for us - I'd appreciate hearing them too!

Thanks,
Veronica

I got him out, put him in his reptarium took him outside in the sunshine (about 90ish degrees) came back in, dropped water on his nose, misted his head, put out peas, pellets, chopped green beans, and lima beans ( all frozen, but thawed ) and he didn't do nothing but head straight for his log.

Should I get a stool and take him to the vet?

PS: He isn't using the bathroom very often at all either.

So he can just get out of his sleeping mode and back out into the real world, or what? I need some ideas if anyone can help.

last summer my friend's male beardie wouldn't wake up from brumation, either. Then she had to go on vacation, and he came to stay at my home, where his cage faced the cages of some of my dragons. He woke up that first day, and was up from then on. Maybe we triggered a "Mating Season" response?
Anyway, if you have a friend with a beardie, might be worth putting your beardie where he can see the other beardie in the cage. I know, a very wierd idea, but it might help.

It's possible that if he was treated for parasites that the treatment killed off the beneficial bacteria in his digestive tract. Without that he can't process his food and get any nutrition from it. You can try adding Nutribac to his food or live culture yoghurt. He may also just be debilitated from the meds. They are pretty harsh on lizards.

Hope this helps.
