Redfoot Substrate

Gpoop Nov 14, 2004 11:38 AM

Can I use Sphagum moss as substrate? I know most people use moss and cypress mulch and I was just wondering if I could just use the moss. Thanks.

why not just pick from up from your local garden center. I use a mix of topsoil (no pearlite or styrafoam) and cypress and both the redfoots and I love it!

I get 2 cu ft bags for $2.50 tax, title, dealer prep & options included from Home Depot or Lowes. It will cover a 2' x 4' area about 2" deep.

I have been looking for cypress mulch for my Redfoot tortoise habitat, but I have been unable to find any. I live in So Cal. What else would work or where can I find cypress mulch?

Having lived on the West Coast for most of my life and now being a recent transplant to the East... Cypress is available everywhere out East and not available much if at all in the West.

Given that cypress mulch is way too expensive when purchased from pet places, try this...

Do a few websearches for Cypress Mulch providers and determine if they have West Coast distributors that you can order through.

I know ACE Hardware carries big bags from a major Cypress Mulch provider. Check with your local ACE Hardware and see if they can have shipments sent to their location. Most can do this but it depends on how flexible their supply chain is. ACE sells the bags for 6$ for large bags (enough for a 4 x 8 space 2-3" deep).

Good luck!

Paul
