building a cage for kingsnakes

kirkpatrick Nov 14, 2004 04:15 PM

i am expanding my kingsnake collection and have decided to build a cage rather than buy more terrariums. i drew out the plans and dimensions and decide to build it with pine because it is inexpensive and nice looking. but then i remember reading that you shouldn't use certain type of wood chips for substrate and pine was one type in question. so i was wondering if it was safe to use for my cage. if anyone could help it would be great. thank you

Pine boards will be safe for two reasons. First, they are not ground down like shavings so the relative surface area is much less. That's how the phenols get released from shavings. Second, you'll need to seal your pine with something which will slow the release of these compounds.
