GOOD NEWS!!!

BlueKing Nov 14, 2004 05:25 PM

I posted about a month ago concerned with my yearling 4.5' E. Indigo's worsening eye abrasions. One eye (the left) was severely scuffed-up looking, the other eye was also in the same shape including a noticeable dent! After adding an extra (huge) water dish, misting the cage and closing most of the top of the enclosure to the point of some slight mildew growth, he's recovering nicely! It has been over a week since he's shed, and the pic tells it all (the scuff is gone!). I am quite happy, since I was told by someone that this condition was irreversible! The dent on the right eye has also shrunk considerably and I think by the next shed it'll be gone (provided I keep up the humidity).

That is good news but I personally wouldn't have sacrificed good air flow with high humidity with creating an environment where stagnant air due to limited or no fresh air exchange could potentially cause far more harm than good. You mentioned that you had mildew growth and that to me is a very unhealthy environment that could lead to respiratory problems (that will end up being a very long term problem). In cases such as this, I will create an artificial high humidity retreat with a plastic storage box and several inches of dampened spaghnum moss that is placed in the cage...indigos will seek these out and I can then still provide excellent ventilation which is absolutely crucial for the long term health of this species. Just my .02.

Artificial tear ointment on this beauty's eyes!!! You can get it at any grocery store...DO NOT USE VASELINE!!!!!!I don't care what your think...Vaseline is a dessicant..It is hydrophobic, not hydroscopic(draws in water) as the tear ointments are..
I live in CO where we have "negative" himidity..I use it daily as soon as they go blue and especially when you are expecting shed in a couple of days..Your stress level will drop greatly!!

I've had errebennus too long and never had to increase humidity. So mildew was NEVER an issue. Thanks for the input - It IS much appreciated!

No more mildew!!!
