Update-Black Tree Monitor project

RoadSpawn Nov 14, 2004 05:38 PM

Hey All....
Well it's been about two months since I put my adult pair together and I have yet to see any breeding activity. It's what I expected. I think it will be another 6-9 months before they "go at it"...... The waiting games sucks........

Good luck with your project. But remember, first she has to cycle. Only then will any copulation mean anything. It's your job to provide her the neccassary conditions for this. And forget about any pre-concieved time-line that you might come up with as it is completely irrelevant.

Yeah, I have to agree with mike, give her what she needs, and then if she is healthy/physically capable, she will cycle.. Breeding follows this, and cycling is crucial for a successful breeding to occur..time means nothing.

I didn't really understand your 6-9 month thing... how did you come up with a window of time, for when your animals are going to breed? Just curious...

Best of luck to you, keep up the good work(at keeping them healthy and alive-most people fail to do that..). Can't wait to see you experience success with this species... Cheers, have a great day...

Thanks for the reply. Is there anything else I can do to help her cycle besides: basking-120, ambient 80-90, humd.>70%, many branches & vines, diet of mice and king worms, rain system???

in my experience, altering rain cycles plays an important role, but I would have to say that the female's food intake is most important... Feed her frequently, and she will cycle, given everything else is suitable to her..

Food----> Energy----> Reproduction----> Eggs----> Babies(hard part)

cheers, best of luck with them..

Road Spawn, good luck! Black Trees are awesome! I have had a pair of females (at least that is what they are supposed to be, and appear to be) for a few months. I love them! They are the coolest lizards I have ever owned. Smart too! I would expect your monitors to be in your possession for over a year before they are just established enough to breed. Whether or not they will is up to them. I hope you succeed in breeding your monitors. They need us to try.

Good Luck!

Howard.
