Need new enclosure

Hetfield6J Nov 14, 2004 06:24 PM

My male veiled (about 5 months) is getting to big for his enclosure, so its time for me to get a new one. I have been looking in pet stores, and online for the past week. Will someone please just link me to a great enclosure that will last him for good? Should i go rep with mesh, or screen, or blah blah...

go to LLLreptile.com and find the 2x2x4ft aluminum screen cage. (under "Terrariums, Screened Cages, and Vision Cages" in the "Reptile Cage Supplies" category) Those are really great and are pretty much the standard for adult chams. Almost everybody here uses them. I also think that LLL is having a sale on the screen cages. They are super easy to clean, too.

Stay away from the Reptariums. Their price fooled me in to getting one and they're way more trouble than they're worth. Just get yourself a nice screened cage from LLL and it'll last you for a LONG time.

For a 5 month-old veiled, though, I'd go for the 18x18x36in cage and then wait until he's about 10 months before I get the 2x2x4 footer.

What kind of setup do you have your cham in now?

He's in a half screen enclosure that he's been in since about 2 months. UVB, and basking lights. Pothos plant, and some fake vines. He is getting to the point where he doesnt feel comfortable in his plant. I was planning on buying an umbrella or ficus tree for his new enclosure, plus the pothos. Any one tree considered better for veilds?

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to order that screen cage now.

The ones I prefer to use (and my veiled loves) are Ficus Benjamina (I don't really care for it, but he does. lol) Boston Ferns, Pothos, Dracaenas, and especially Scheffleras (my veiled mows through these things like you wouldn't believe. Just eaats them up like mad.) What's good is you can find these plants and most Orchards Supply & Hardware stores for pretty cheap. That's where I got mine. And I think Costco is now selling Dracaenas for about 9 bucks or something. At least the one where I live does.

How many panels of your cage are actually screen? What are it's measurement, LxWxH? If all you have is a pothos and some fake vines in there, that's probably why he's uncomfortable. Get a Schefflera for you cage. At Orchards, they come in decent sizes (some pretty big, actually) and are about 8 bucks. Just cover the soil with some river rocks from PetsMart (3.99 a bag) so you cham doesn't accidentally ingest it and put that in there. That might help a lot and it'll put you off of buying a new cage for a while.

I was going to just get a tree for him, but he really needs a bigger enclosure anyways. Current one is about 10"x10" by 18". Three sides screen. I ordered the one you adviced from LLL. Thanks for the help :P
