A question about AZ mountain kings........

lilroach56 Nov 14, 2004 06:25 PM

What is an "applegate phase" Az mountain king?

What are the different sub species of L. pyromelana?

What are the differences between the subspecies?

What are the differences in the price between the different subspcies of L. pyromelana?

I may not be the best one to answer, but I'll try.

An "Applegate" phase pyro, is one which has little or no black (usually just the cap on the head is black). Named for Robert Applegate, who first produced them.

There used to be 4 pyromelana sub-species. The Arizona Mtn. King (pyromelana pyromelana), the Utah Mtn. King (pyromelana infralabias), the Huachuca Mtn. King (pyromelana woodini), and the Tarahumara Mtn. King (pyromelena knoblochi). The Huachuca Mtn. King was done away with first (it had a lower band count than most pyros), recently I believe the Utah Mtn. King has beed done away with, (the Utah Mtn. King has 9 infralabial scales rather than 10).
It was determined that pyromelana is a highly variable species and animals that fit the description of woodini or infralabias are found all over the range of lampropeltis pyromelana. That leaves 2 subspecies surviving, the Tarahumara Mtn. King and the Az. Mtn King.

Greg is right on the re-class of pyromelana. infralabialis was dropped recently due to the fact that other pyros throughout the region (including pyro pyro) often times expressed varying labial scale counts which was the original basis for infralabialis. as for the Applegate phase I posted a pic of one I hatched this year, they are awesome when the black is gone and the red seems to "glow"

Here in Flagstaff under the old taxonomy the local pyros were considered to be pyro pyro. Yet about 50% of the snakes I find here would fall into "infralabialis" morphologically, about 35% would key out as "pyro pyro" and the rest would key out as "woodini". I have even found an infralabialis and a woodini under the same rock.

Is there a major difference in the ssp of pyro anymore?

pricing?

As far as pricing goes, there isn't much difference between the two remaining sub-species. Normal specimens range from maybe $75 to $125. Snakes with reduced black and lower triad counts are usually considered more desirable, and go for $150-$200. Applegate phase, albinos, hypos, etc.. cost a lot more. I hope this helps. Check out the classifieds on this site. See what they're selling for.
