New to Crested Geckos, Some Questions...

elcheal Nov 14, 2004 06:28 PM

I have a leopard gecko right now and I was first looking into a lizard that could be kept in a ten gallon tank when i ran across crested geckos(I know that they should be kept in a much larger enclosure than a 10 gallon tank). I thought that they were so cute but also thought that they would need tropical temperatures and more live food and such, i was extremely pleased to find out that they only need to be kept at 75 degrees and eat half live food half baby food. Now for my questions:
~My house can get very hot in the summer(up to 85 degrees in the middle of the day.) Would a crested gecko be able to tolerate those temps.?
~I've heard that they eat mainly baby food fruit and only a few live insects and I've heard that they eat mainly live food and only a little bit of baby food fruit. Which is true?
~What sites have good prices on geckos? I'm not interested in breeding them much so i don't really care about morphs as long as they look nice.
~What is the best substrate and overall set-up for an enclosure for a crested gecko?
~Will a Reptarium Basic 22, 14.5" x 14.5" x 25" be good for one gecko?
Sorry for the long post
Thanks very much

Instead of baby food I would highly recommend the T-Rex powdered diet. It is complete and balanced. You can still feed some crickets (though you wouldn't have to).
I agree that 85 degrees is pushing it.

you can get the powder at petco, petsmart, reptile depot, or a lot of private breeders sell it on their sites. then you can feed it from bottle/jar caps or small deli cups (my favorite) when they get older.
Don't handle your cillie much at all while it's small, it's too stressful and they're too delicate. When they get older you can handle them, most don't even try to bite (I've only ever seen one that was an attacker), though they will jump. Just remember that they're not dogs and they won't want to spend every minute with you, so limit the time they're out with you.
Anthony Capenetto's site has more good info on how to set up the tank and basic requirements. If you live in a really dry part of the country (like here in CA) you may want a tank with a couple class sides to keep in humidity.
