shedding question...

joijoi29 Nov 14, 2004 08:23 PM

is it bad to pick the shedding skin off your dragon? I know this doesn't sound like a good idea but my dragon seems to like it if i give a little scratch where she is shedding and pick off the pieces hangin' off. Can i hurt her this way?

Actually you should Never pull or peel the sheddidng skin.

In some spots it may not be ready to come off, pieces still attached, and you can irritate it, or cause an infection by pulling it. It can also leave a scar.

Just not a good idea. Better to just mist your dragon, that helps the skin come off quicker and easier.
And for those tough spots, try a dab of mineral oil, or baby oil, works like a charm.

So stop picking or I'll have to smack your hands, LOL

Take a pretty pic instead and post it, for us!

LOL..... that's too funny.... you gave me a terrible repressed memory back of how my grandma used to lick her fingers and rub stuff off of my face...... come her Robi you have a zit let me pop that thing......LOL.... she was a picker too...LOL

If you have any problems with shedding you should try this product by T-Rex called Bio-Mist. Really awesome stuff! I use it through the entire shedding process. Really seems to take the stress out for them.

Later,
Robert

P.S. don't call me Robi.......LOL

You have to be very careful when trying to remove unshed skin, as PHeve mentions. Most times the shed will come off naturally with daily mistings etc. A nice 10-15 soak in luke warm water helps to lift and remove dead skin without harming the dragon. For partularly difficult areas, baby oil can be rubbed on the area to soften and loosen the skin.

Watch the tail tip and toes to make sure the old skin does shed. Some times unshed skin will stick on the toes or tail tip and it can get tight and cut off circulation, causing death of the toe or tail tip. This typically doesn't happen though but something to watch for.

I came home tonight and of course both my girls are shedding. It drives me CRAZY! Dezzie looked at me like "aren't ya gonna get that mom?"
Robbie...my girls run screaming when I lick my finger and try to wipe a dirt smudge off their face! You must have been well loved! lol

But no...I have not picked a piece of skin since my first post. It's killing me though! (even caught my oldest daughter trying to pick!)
