My usually voracious carpet decided to stop eating

Gutterbum Nov 14, 2004 08:29 PM

Any ideas why this would happen would be greatly appreciated.

here's some background:

3yr old female, always fed frozen thawed rats (lately from rodent pro)

Always 1 lg. rat every 2 weeks

no signs of mouth rot either physically or behavior wise

she is very active lately

kept by herself

no other snakes on the property

she has a hide box

temp range in enclosure: 90 hotspot to 80 down near hide

ceramic heat emitter during night , ful spectrum reptile basking heat lamp during day.

Wondering if it may be breeding season? or maybe winter behavior,
although unless she was close to shed ,winter, or summer, she always has eaten for me well. Then again she may have just reached sexual maturity and this is why its new behavior??

3 weeks now

getting concerned.

thx in advance

I am by no means a snake expert. However my juvie carpet stopped eating for 3 weeks also. He ate as soon as I got him out of the deli cup and then nothing for 3 weeks. I tried some live pinks, they were accepted, and since he is back to FT. Just a thought, I know the little ones are problematic eaters and your's is well established.

My male JCP is about 3 years old now, but last winter he went about a month and a half refusing food. It seems like a winter thing/breeding season issue. But then he picked right up again and is a eating machine.

my 3 yr old jcp did the exact same thing. what i did was i would either take a sponge dipped in lukewarm water and give her a good spongebath or i would put some water in the tub and let her swim around. then after a couple or 3 days of doing that she finally shed and a couple days later ate 2 big rats no prob.
