jasonmattes Nov 14, 2004 09:29 PM

has anyone shipped cages before?
The size of the cage to be shipped is 48x24x24 i wasnt sure if its cheaper to go with ups or similar shipping company or to have it shipped with a freight carrier....
The cage is melamine so its farily heavy..

Thanks Jason

jasonmattes Nov 15, 2004 12:28 AM

I belive its a hundred pound limit...thats what the ups guy at my old job told me

Fed ex is cheaper and has a 70lbs max before price increases greatly, right now under 70lbs it can cost you around $75 to ship something that big.

I believe that cage is too big to be shipped via Fed Ex, UPS, etc. They have maximum dimensions as well as maximum weights. That's why cage companies don't build 4' tall racks anymore - they can't be shipped unless they are broken down.

UPS has a weight limit of 150 lbs...with two people delivering.
I'm sure they make you pay dearly for that. Also dimensions play a part. I dont remember what their dimension limit is
USPS is 70 lbs...with total dimension of 108" that is the total of length plus girth.
If it's melamine, can it be broken down? And reassembled by the adressee?
That would save you a bunch.
If you ship that much weight Fed Ex... you'd need to be a bazillionaire!

...........that the freight cost may be higher than the cage is worth,of coarse breaking it down will help.check out fedex.com and ups.com for price quotes.motor freight to a residential address is usually the most expensive.

I did some calling around and fed-ex said they would deliver it but would cost 130 bucks..
cant break it done cause all my cages get glued...
I may have to figure out the max dimensions and weight i can build and ship reasonably....

Thanks for the help

Jason

the price quoted to you was ground or air? if this is a one time deal you could send the receipient size dimensions and they could have a cabinet shop cut the pieces and it could be assembled on that end,i don't know all the details, food for thought.have fun!

UPS total weight is 150lbs ( they charge $50 if its over for overweight charge)
UPS total united inches is 165 thats length x width x height plus 2x's the height and width

Fed ex is i think 90 lbs on a ground delivery
and total united inches is 130 ( same rules as fed ex to get it )

Hi Alan,

>>UPS total united inches is 165 thats length x width x height plus 2x's the height and width

That can't be right. In that case a 5" cube would have a total united inches of 145. (5x5x5) 2x5 x 2x5 = 145. A 6" cube would have a total united inches of 240.

I believe the formula is length 2w 2h.

So a package of 40x20x20 would have a TUI of 40 2x20 2x20 or 40 40 40 = 120.

They don't show up.

The correct formula, I believe, is length PLUS 2w PLUS 2h.
