Swollen forelimb on Gray Treefrog

4everherpn Nov 14, 2004 10:02 PM

I have a gray treefrog that has a severely swollen forelimb. I'm thinking it maybe an infection or a broken limb. What do I do in this case?

I noticed it today when he was not climbing on the glass, which is where it normally is. It sits on a branch in the vivarium now. Whenever it moves it avoids using that forelimb and the forelimb des not move.

He is also housed with 2 green treefrogs and an Arizona Tiger Salamander. He receives 12 hours of day/night and crickets weekly (a large portion about 2 dozen between the animals) and crickets that I find sporadically in the house.

I'm thinking of removing him from his tank and putting him in a separate aquarium. None of the other critters show similar/any symptoms.

I am aware of people's opinions on mixing species and I do not want another post about why not to mix species. I want suggestions on what to do with this particular gray treefrog. I'd love to see any advice and I appreciate all that I do receive.

Sounds like it could be broken, especially if he avoids using it. I'm not sure how common this is in amphibians, but I know in some lizard species like iguanas, swollen limbs are the precurser to metabolic bone disease. Either way, I would definately move him to a simple sterile enclosure. I use paper towel substrate, some thing to climb on, and a small shallow water dish. Very easy to clean and very easy to monitor behavior. A possible broken limb wil also severly effect his ability to hunt, so being housed by himself for now, he will not have to compete with the other animals for food. Plus, if he is diseased, you want him as far away from the other as possible. You may also want to thoroughly clean their enclosure out, as well. Hopefully someone else can help with how to heal a broken limb, but this is a start. Good Luck.
