boa has one bad eye, is it infected? danger to my other herps?

rugbyman2000 Nov 14, 2004 10:12 PM

I just picked up a ten year old red tail boa for my reptile rescue, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. She is a very beautiful specimen who seems very healthy despite appearing underfed. There is one problem I noticed right away though.

One of her eyes is completely fogged over, I'd say even more so than when a boa sheds. Is this the sign of a disease? Could she be contageous? Or is it more likely a sign of old age giving her problems with eye site?

Thanks to all the experts out there who answer this one!

The first thing I would suspect is a retained eye cap. Not too big of a deal. I usually soak the animal for about a half hour in luke warm water. Then I gently massage the eye until the extra cap comes off. If you aren't sure it is an eye cap, I would recommend that you take it to an experienced vet. They will know. Most eye problems, even infections usually aren't that big of a deal. Usually you will just have to use some kind of antibiotic cream. Can you post a picture?

Hope this helps some.

Howard.

Finally got my boa to the vet to find out he at one time had an eye infection that caused blindness in that eye. The infection is no longer active which is good news, and since I only feed frozen-thawed there's nothing for him to worry about with his poor site.
