jasonmattes Nov 15, 2004 01:21 AM

Well i got 1.4 tokays the other day...never had them before but have lots o snakes and a crested.
3 of them are really healthy looking and active...one is pretty skinny and sickly looking.....the deal was if i took the good ones i had to take the sickly one..
i have it separated from everything else...i tossed in a couple crickets and it hasnt eat them..i was told it ate a few meal worms.....
any idea what i should do or just take care of it like normal and see if it comes around

1)Make sure he/she is well hydrated. Tokays are easy to rehydrate because they will often keep their mouths open when you pick them up. This makes it easy to drop a little water in for them to drink.
2)If you are willing to pay the money take it to a reputable vet to have it examined. Or at least give them a stool sample to check for protozoans and endoparasites (this is very inexpensive to do). I really recommend you check for parasites!!!
3)I've had sickly lizards that I could "jump-start" by placing a freshly killed cricket or roach into their mouth (when they are mad from you holding them. They will bite the food out of self defense. If you gently place them back into their enclosure they will often eat what they have between their jaws. Sometimes they will just shake it out without swallowing but it is worth a try. This a way of force feeding without being too invasive and might be enough to get some energy back into their system. Be persistant but don't shock them too much, remember it is already on the weak side....

she appears to be doing much better the last couple days...she is eating some mealworms and a few crickets....i am misting a few times a day...i think she might make it...when i first saw her it wasnt real sure she would even live..but she is doing alot better the last couple days so we'll see how things go

Thanks Jason

one of my tokays did the same thing when i got him, and now is the most tame of them all, (i suppose b/c when he was sickly I handled him so much???) and he is also the most agressive feeder, greedily eating all the crickets before the others!

good luck!
