Swollen forelimb on Gray Treefrog

4everherpn Nov 15, 2004 01:52 AM

I have a gray treefrog that has a severely swollen forelimb. I'm thinking it maybe an infection or a broken limb. What do I do in this case?

I noticed it today when he was not climbing on the glass, which is where it normally is. It sits on a branch in the vivarium now. Whenever it moves it avoids using that forelimb and the forelimb des not move.

He is also housed with 2 green treefrogs and an Arizona Tiger Salamander. He receives 12 hours of day/night and crickets weekly (a large portion about 2 dozen between the animals) and crickets that I find sporadically in the house.

I'm thinking of removing him from his tank and putting him in a separate aquarium. None of the other critters show similar/any symptoms.

I know that there are different opinions on mixing different species. I am not interested in hearing about these opinions. I just want any advice possible.

Your choice to separate him from the other animals was the right choice, for now at least. keep him on a moisted paper toweling substrait for now, so he can get to his crickets with ease. also I highly suggest that you take him to a herp vet that is close to you to get his limb checked out. it sounds like he damaged it.

i wouldn't just seperate the grey, but the greens and the tiger sal. You're just taking the easy way out by keeping them together in the same tank.

forgot to add, maybe the tiger sal could have gotten ahold of his forearm?

Yeah that is what I was thinking. When I got a look at it it appeared to be broken. I am going to take the tiger salamander out and make 2 new enlosures for both of them.

I thought about it. That gray tended to not stay a high up on the glass as the green treefrogs probably due to bullying from them. Therefore it would sit on the branches in there. The tiger could have gotten ahold of him that way. Another way could have been simply from feeding. The tiger could have nipped the forearm while both were chasing for the same cricket. In either case I guess I'll have to separate my critters.

thats great to hear you will be seperating them, setting up a couple 10gallons only costs about 30 bucks anyway

I would get this frog to a vet ASAP. I had a toad with a swollen arm and thought maybe it was something small. I waited about a week before taking him to the vet. The poor little guy had a broken arm, I'm guessing from the pet store as I had only had him a very short time. Despite medication and cleaning his arm twice a day he still died. Getting on the problem right away would be the best thing. If he gets any type of infection it may be too late to save him.
Good Luck.
