Missing nails??? I don't know what to do!!!

seymorspal Nov 15, 2004 09:15 AM

I noticed a while back when my young ig started to shed that he was missing finger nails on his front hands. he now only has one full nail on each hand but i can see the nails start to grow back but there growing so slowly. He is about 16in and has just completed fully shedding. Has anyone seen this with there ig? Or know what it could be? He is eating fine and still active (especially when trying to get him out of his cage, we play the chasing game then) What should i do?
~HELP~
Thanks

Hey, usually this will happen when your ig scratchs the cage's walls trying to get out. It keeps on scratching, hurting him self. One of my igs wouldn't stop doing that till I moved him to a new enclouser, next to the window. Since then he stoped scratching and is living a happy life in his new enclouser.
Well, you can try that.
Take care and good luck,
Dan

It could be a sign of poor health. What do you feed him?? Does he recieves unfiltered UVB rays, either from UVB spectrum lights or sunlight?? How is the temperature in his enclouser??

He gets Collard, mustard and turnip greens daily, Apples and butternut squash. I also sprinkle Rep-cal calcium and Rep-cal juvinile food (i moisten it first).

I have a UVB tubelight that he can get close to. On the second floor of his cage is his heat lamp which keeps at the bottom of the floor about 80% and up close to the lamp about 90%.

He gets sprayed twice a day and baths 2 to 3 times a week.

He is in a 4 foot cage, he is not getting any real sunlight and can't see out the window. His cage is in the middle of my room. But i think i can work out moving his cage to the window. just will take some rearranging.

The window will just give your lizard something to do. The glass filters out uv... making it usless for uvb... but he will be happy to look outside!

Well, it shouldn't be poor health.. Is there any mirror next to his cage?? Can he see it???
Just like Lowrider said, the window will give him something to do...
Just keep us posted. O, and if you notice him scratching, take him out. Let him roam a little. Always make sure to ig proof your room first.
Take care and good luck,

I think he is to small to roam. He is really fast right now and loves to play hide and go seek with me. When i try to feed him he runs out of his cage and hides and i have to find him. lol. not fun.

There are no mirrors near his cage. I got and anole and a fish he can watch lol. but when it warms up i will move him near a window. Its about 29% here now and too much cold air come in through our windows.

What else can i give him to watch? Anything i can put in his cage to keep him busy?

Lots of branches, some fake plants... How small is he? When I say "roam", I don´t mean to tell you to let him roam all day, just let him walk around a bit, while you watch him, or just put him on your sholder.. He will probably calm down, than you can put him back in his cage...
Take care,
Dan
