I've been holding out

niki_athena Nov 15, 2004 10:16 AM

Before I ever owned a collared lizard I caught this adult male in the wild. I was on a backpacking trip and our old roommate saw a lizard run and hide in the rocks. He pointed at it and I looked and looked but did not see it until he almost touched it with his walking stick because it blended in so well. The lizard was so pretty with all of its spots and handsome collar. After taking off my pack I chased it a little around the scree hillside. I knew if it ran far enough away I would not be able to catch him. So while he was looking me in the eyes and watching my hair move gently in the breeze I brought my hands wavering from both sides in the air closer and closer...Then before he could dash away I grabbed him. He tried to bite but it was to late I had a great hold of him.

I thought the colors were interesting and didn't know at the time I had a male Crotaphytus bicinctores.

Here I am with my big catch of the day before he was let free to spread his great survival genes. Look at the massive head on him.
