Youngster hiding

seductivereptile Nov 15, 2004 11:11 AM

Hi, I was just wondering why my little girl is hiding. I haven't had her a month yet. So I am wondering if when snakes are going to shed do they hide out, and how long does a complete shed take? Thanks to the advice from everyone here my temps are good and she looks great and is eating great. I was just wondering if this sounds like a shed time thing or a weather (getting colder now) thing. Also, how often should I be misting her enclosure when she is in shed? As always, Thanks!

Snakes hide all of the time. Some of mine only come out at night. Don't worry she'll be fine.

she is hiding because that is what snakes do. esp babies. they like to feel secure and 'feel' the sides of what ever they hide in. they do hide out when in shedding also. mine take anywhere from 7-10 days for my corns to 2+ weeks for my jungle python. what i do is mist their tanks a bit when they go into shedding then when their eyes clear i'll mist more and even take them out and mist the snake its self. mine always have a perfect shed. be sure you have something with a rough surface so she can rub on to get the old skin off. although i witnessed my ghost corn shed last week and he just rubbed his face on the bottom of the tank and started to shed. it was cool. first time i got to see a snake shed since i've had them.
don't worry to much about your baby hiding. it's normal.

It could be a number of reasons why. The complete shed cycle is usually a week, but could be longer. Their skins clouds up for several days, then clears up. After it clears, they usually shed about 3 days later. Make sure there's a water bowl for her to soak in, some snakes really like that. And sometimes snakes just love to hide for days.
