Question for RedxBlue Tegu Owners?

tc5000 Nov 15, 2004 12:09 PM

This question is for the St.Pierres or any RxB owners out there that have had there Tegus for a year or two and who keep their temps up year round. What kind if any hibernation cycles have you observed?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I actually do research on hibernation in Tupinambis merianae. The answer to your question is somewhat simple. T.merianae and T.rufescens are facultative hibernators, meaning they really only hibernate if external stimuli promote it. If kept INDOORS, under constant conditions, they'll keep on being active year round.
If, however, they have some sort of access to outdoor stimuli (such as photoperiod) they will tend to go into hibernation even without much change in temperature.
Unfortunately, despite my studies, I still haven't worked out what triggers preparation for hibernation in these guys.
As for any other tegu species, many do not hibernate at all in the wild, and it is still up to debate on others (ie. T. quadrilineatus).
