Lizard Selection?? Desperate for help!

CannabisQueen Nov 15, 2004 02:32 PM

I haven't come across any sites to help select the correct lizard for what you want, its asking a bit much, but it would still be nice!!
Anyways, I'm looking for help with locating the right kind of pet for me. I've always wanted a lizard. There are so many out there though, its hard to get down to selecting one.
We've got a 45 gallon tank (long not tall) to start out a home with. We'd like something tropical, we have a fogger that we'd like to use. I also want something that is fairly tame and that can be handled. I'd also like a somewhat active animal (I've noticed that geckos don't seem to be too active). We had an Anole, so I know about keeping humidity and what-not, but I'm ready to move up to a bigger lizard that can be handled.
Any suggestions?
Any help on where to go looking for information?

I know this is broad and general, but if someone can give me some help that would be great!

Thanks!

Carrie

well not many of the big "pet" lizards need a fogger so if you dont mind leaving that out and having something like a woodland or savana habitat it would be easier to choose.here are some good pet lizards.
blue tongued skink(woodland)
plated lizard(woodland)
uromastx(desert)
water dragons(tropical)
spiny tail monitors(desert)
bearded dragon(desert)

hope this helps

I don't mind leaving it out...its not really my concern, more of my boyfriends!!

I read that Water Dragon's need a bigger enclosure than a 45 gallon tank...but maybe I'll have to dig for more information on this!

Thanks so much for your help!

for a 45 gallon tank, i think the maximum sized lizard is perhaps 10-12 inches in length. maybe you could try knight anoles?

though, yo usaid that your tank is not a tall one. these larger lizards are often aboreal.

perhaps a larger chamelean? they could benifit from the fogger.

I'm not too keen on Anoles again, I want something I can handle, and I think we're going to nix the fogger and use that with our turtles...

I've been doing some research and I think its going to be a starter home for a bearded dragon!
Thanks so much for your help!

45 gallons would be ok for a baby and young water dragon, but an adult is going to require at least 100 gallons. ive got a 300 gallon for mine. they also need a lot of humidity and a pond/

actually im pretty sure the bearded dragons and monitors also need at least 100 gallons.

Most monitors need more then a 100 gal, And beardies do fine in a 45/50.
